As part of the TechWomen Fellowship 2024, our team of five passionate women from Nigeria – Prof Adanna HENRI-UKOHA, Lolade ALONGE, Dr Temiloluwa ADESHINA, Faith E. ONARINDE, Alero THOMPSON, came together to develop a solution to address food security issues while considering the challenges of insecurity on farmlands. We are proud to share our journey and the impact of our Social Impact Project, Farm Boxx, which aims to empower women through sustainable agriculture.

We conceptualized Farm Boxx as a response to the pressing issues of food security and insecurity in Nigeria. Our project focuses on empowering women to grow their own food at home, providing them with the resources and skills needed to sustainably cultivate vegetables. By doing so, the project aims to eliminate the need for women to venture into unsafe farmlands and promote community development. With the support of our mentors, Rekha Pai and Kristy Bonham, we refined our idea and developed a comprehensive plan to begin our impact by empowering 50 women in Surulere Local Government Area of Lagos State. After pitching our idea at the Social Impact Pitch Contest held at the Amazon Web Services Office in East Palo Alto, California, we were awarded a $3,000 grant to execute our project.

Conclusion

Our recent workshop and training event was a huge success, with over 70 female participants showing up to learn and grow with us. It featured a 2-day event with the first day creating awareness and sensitizing the Surulere LGA about our initiative and inviting the women to be a part of our program. Over 20 women were around for our awareness walk in Surulere and 70+ women participated in the day 2 event that featured several practical trainings. We’ve empowered these women with the right skills and tools to thrive in home-based farming by providing starter kits, including sacks, soils, seedlings, and fertilizers. The feedback from our participants has been overwhelmingly positive, and we’re excited to see the long-term impact of our project.
